Questionable Weather by Kim Schmaus
Imagine this: it’s a nice breezy morning. The wind blows on your face and feels just right- not too hot, not too cold. Life is good. You walk to Hokie Grill and buy pasta from Pizza Hut to eat outside because the weather is kind today, whipping out your laptop to get some work done while soaking in the sun. You decide to explore campus for a little too, maybe even getting a drink from Deets. You explore spots of campus you’ve never seen before.
This all makes a 180 degree turn the next day. You wake up refreshed (or not) and go outside in a short sleeved shirt and pants to be hit in the face by very cold winds. Wasn’t it warm the day before? Can someone please explain this? You planned your whole day out in the hopes that the weather would be warm again.
This is nothing new to those who have lived in Blacksburg for many years. The weather here shifts rapidly. One day it’ll be sunny and warm, the next cold and snowy. However, you can still enjoy your time on campus despite these drastic changes in weather. I personally suggest that you wear multiple layers rather than one thick one. When it’s cold outside, you’ll be nice and toasty, but once it gets warm you can deduce your outfit down to a t-shirt. Also, don’t let the cold weather discourage you from exploring! If not the hidden gems of campus, head to Deets for some warm drinks! One of my personal favorites this holiday season is “Home for the Holidays”. It tastes like the holidays (I sadly don’t remember the specific flavors). It’s also so rewarding to eat a hot meal after being in the cold for a while.
Overall, Blacksburg’s changes in weather is a question we all wonder about, but don’t let that discourage you from exploring campus and trying new things!
